How does it work?
As an outgrowth of the medical discipline of trigger point injection therapy, Myotherapy concentrates on functional muscle anatomy, rather than meridian lines or skeletal structure.
The Myotherapist searches for "trigger points" which are irritable spots in the muscles. They are unique in every individual and can be the result of falls suffered as far back as childhood, poor posture, accidents, sports, occupational hazards, disease....and yes, even stress. When trigger points flare up, they cause muscle spasm, weakness, restricted range of motion and pain.
During a Myotherapy treatment, the patients trigger points are "diffused" and subsequently "erased" by the Myotherapist who uses pressure from fingers, knuckles and/or elbows, followed by a kneading massage. The newly relaxed muscles are then passively stretched, and the patient is given a series of corrective exercises to be used at home to help keep the muscles free from pain.
Myotherapy has been very successful in the treatment for athletes, artists, musicians, singers and computer operators as well as other occupations.
